Dog owners have been warned not to put themselves in danger by trying to rescue their pets from the sea.
It comes after a Bridlington lifeboat crew was called to an incident at Fraisthorpe on Sunday.
A spokesperson said the RNLI "will always launch the lifeboat if there is an animal in trouble on the coast".
They added: "If you are worried about your dog, call 999 and ask for the coastguard – do not go after them and put yourself in danger."
On Sunday, both owner and dog made it back to the beach safely, crew member Ash Traves said.
"Dogs are obviously man's best friend, and the urge for their owners to enter the water is understandable, if not recommended," he said.
"In most cases, a dog will find its own way back to the shore."
The RNLI also advises owners to keep their dogs on leads near cliff edges, harbours and fast-flowing water.
